| Deal is
Highlighted as a Success Story |

Mr. Jay
Deal started his home-based heating and cooling business in York County
as a part-time enterprise in 1993. Over the years he deliberately grew
his business until 1999 when he decided to move it from a part-time to a
full-time venture. From this time until 2000, he was able to increase
his company's revenues by 30%.
The heating
and cooling business is a highly competitive field with a large number
of firms offering virtually similar services. Mr. Deal was faced with
the challenge of finding other markets that had not been fully exploited
by his competition, developing a unique selling point or changing his
approach to marketing to potential customers.
In 2001,
Mr. Deal approached the SBDC and requested assistance in both conducting
a market analysis and assisting him in developing a revised marketing
plan. The analysis indicated that York County, a heavily residential
area, had many sub-divisions that were approaching a prime age when the
initial heating and cooling installations would require replacement.
Through a combination of selected advertising on the local cable
channel, targeted mailings, advertising in housing association
newsletters and meeting with local housing association members in these
selected areas, he was able to identify a niche at just the right moment
and identify himself to his potential customers as the best possible
solution for their needs.
Through the
in-depth analysis of the needs of the marketplace, identifying the most
likely areas for success and then tailoring his message to his
customers, Mr. Deal was able to add its first full-time employee,
purchase an additional work vehicle and enabled him to be selected as
the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce's "Small Business Person of
the Year for 2001".

| Deal Reaps
Business Honor |
 |
|
Jay Deal of
Deal's Heating & Cooling Company, has been named the Peninsula Chamber
of Commerce's Small Business Person of the Year.
The honor,
which was given to Deal earlier this month, is sponsored by the Chamber
and the Small Business Association.
Nominees
for the award must have been in business at least three years. In
considering Deal's nomination, the selection committee looked at how
Deal's Heating & Cooling Company had grown. It also considered the
uniqueness of some of the services it offers and how active Deal is in
community organizations.
Deal is a
lifelong York County resident whose business is located on Showalter
Road, Grafton.

heating ventilation and air conditioning equipment. Services provided for

Gas-qualified gas contractor. He is licensed by the state, has a state

Deal is also EPA certified as a universal technician for proper refrigerant
practices. He ran the business as a part-time venture until recently, when
he officially went full time.
Background: Deal graduated from a state HVAC apprenticeship,
though he first started the program as an electrician's apprentice. "I
started to lean toward the air-conditioning field because you get to do a
little of everything - electrical and pipefitting," he said. "I felt pretty
secure about it. I like being self-employed and the benefit of working with
my family. Besides doing the field work, I also do the business end of it,
too."
Biz tips: "You've got to kind of start out slow," Deal said.
"Between the equipment and my truck and getting some clientele built up,
it's along process. If you take some college courses in business, it'll help
you make yourself more business-oriented. I served in an apprenticeship," he
explained. "That way, besides going to school, you're actually going into
the field and doing what you're learning about."
Plans: Hire an apprentice next year and purchase another truck.
Free time: When not working, Deal likes to spend time with his
family, especially his young daughters and infant son, and coach basketball.
Mottos: "Deal's offers quality contractor services at a
reasonable price." (And the catchier "For a real deal, call Deal's.") |
| "Initially,
it was just residential (clients)," said Deal, who has also worked on a
number of government contracts. "I'm starting to get more into commercial
services. Now, it's about 50-50." |
| Family
affair: Deal's wife, Lolia, serves as business manager and bookkeeper
and brothers Mike and Steve help out part-time. "It's pretty much a family
business," Deal said. |
